Wow, I've never thought about the fact that someone designs the firestation. I've always thought of churches as a cool opportunity for architects, because of the real community that happens there, but Firestations have a much more intense claim.
Fire stations are the only other building type that we market ourselves toward. The reason is everyone here really enjoys the personal aspects of designing a residence for someone, the shared sense of ownership that comes along with the process, and fire stations are very similar in that regard. I am still very friendly with the fire chiefs we work with and several of the fire fighters that use the stations. It's really what makes this job so great.
I am an architect in Dallas, happily married with 1 child.
A majority of the projects I develop are private residences but my firm also specializes in the design of fire stations and retail environments. In 2009 I received the American Institute of Architects "Young Architect of the Year" award (but it was probably for doing things that would cause others to think twice). Life is good.
